Chapter 26: Evade

Arctic Black Zone - SS Ketchum (Beach)

  I wake with a dilemma.

What am I supposed to do with the Egg when it hatches?

I can’t really explain the presence of a rare dinosaur just randomly appearing to be captured. If Amaura are considered rare then Tyrunts are like a whole nother kettle of fish all together.

My Dilemma is that I can’t for the life of me figure out how I'm going to pull this stunt off. The likelihood is… I won’t.

Unless we somehow run into a group of them which I feel is highly unlikely as once the ship is repaired we will be back on open water for god knows how long.

I also have no idea when the Egg is even expected to hatch. I can just imagine it will happen at the worst possible moment like when the cameras are pointed squarely at my beautiful and stunning physique.

“Oi Sparky! Wake up. Help me work through a problem?”

The murder fish awakes from what I can only imagine some dream where she is tearing apart something as she has a look of great satisfaction as she licks her lips, chomps down a couple times and twitches her tail erratically. How she didn’t flip herself out of her bowl is anyone's guess.

  “Ahhh… what… huh… who….boss?”

I pretend that she heard nothing of what I just said and repeat myself and my apparent ‘Dilemma’.

“Well that’s easy! Just don’t worry about it?”

Clearly my fun bag is useless when it comes to giving a crap about the perceptions of those around us… I wish I could be just like her but… yeah i’m not, this shit is going to stress me out until either my cover is blown or shit just doesn’t stick to me because i’m so damn cute.

  “Sparky… You are wonderful….”

  She beams

  “Wonderfully useless.. Sigh”

  She scowls at me half-heartedly

“Then don’t ask me for my opinion, I’m going to go back to sleep”

No real point stressing over the future I guess, I don’t have much control over when the egg will hatch. What I can do however is attempt to use my abilities to improve so with that I send out an inquisitive probe towards the Amaura.

“Hello there, I guess we are on the same team?”

The little dino (although she is already three times my size) looks towards me. She doesn’t bother to reply in words and just shuffles over and bops me on the nose with her own. A sauropod of few words I see.

“So, I don’t know how long I'm going to be able to take care of Jess. I want to make sure that you have what it takes to be her ace, okay?”

The little dino warbles in affirmation. She pulls off what I assume is her version of some muscle man pose where she flexes her front leg and smacks her tail on the deck.

So they plan, if you can even call it that, is to help get Jess’s Pokémon both stronger and also… smarter. Then if he needed to leave he wouldn’t feel like an asshole. Or at least not as big an asshole, leaving the girls in the lurch.

The girls wake and head for their usual routine. More yummy food, although the Amaura doesn’t throw any hissy fits at her sludge bowl to the relief of both girls and food attendants. She did try to eat Adam’s food which earned her headbutt.

“Jess, you need to control your Pokémon better. That little Seel is a violent one.”

  I glare at Anna.

“No chance, he’s just being defensive and who doesn’t want an aggressive Pokémon who still listens to orders?”

Anna looks at me sceptically “Yeah, I don’t really think he’s listening to any of your instructions though, since you don’t really give any!”

Jess just smiles at her friend as she is eating and gives her the bunny eared peace sign.

We head out to the training field and this time Kabu feels comfortable enough with the situation to resume our normal training. He gets the girls to pick two random Pokéballs each to do a fight without us as he wants to train their abilities to command instead of just using Jess’s OP Pokémon for more smackdowns. *cough*

This gives me a good opportunity to try to work on some skills and help Amaura learn some ice type moves. I set up my connection with her and started to try to show her the concept behind the original powdered snow.

It takes very little time for her to harness the element of ICE and she quickly learns how to use powdered snow as it is supposed to be used.

No i’m not going to teach her how to let off ice bombs even if I could.

However I do want to show off a little and show her the move anyway. I concentrate and don’t dump all my MP this time into the ability. I then proceed to punt the little ICE rock out over the ocean and shrapnel flies all around.

The display has distracted some of the trainers who marvel at my ability to use moves that are just so marvellous.

“What a strange move.” Remarks a ACE sitting astride his Corviknight.

He approached the girls during a break during their training to introduce himself.

“Hi girls, I’m Steven. Would you by chance be happy to show me how you taught your little guy that move?”

Jess has butterflies and it seems like she has a little man crush and is lost for words as she blushes beetroot red.

“Hi i’m Anna and this is Jess, that’s her Pokémon Seel. And honestly we don’t know how he learnt it, he was given a Powdered Snow ? and learnt that move instead.”

He looks impressed. “Well thank you for the information anyway, that’s impressive but not unheard of for Pokémon to come up with alternate moves to the ? however usually not at such a young age! Anyhow I need to start my Patrol, keep up the good work girls.”

As he flies off on his avian Jess squeaks out a “Bye..”

I do notice that Anna has been mopping the floor with Jess, however it is not as one sided as it used to be. Glad that some things are improving.

We are interrupted in our training routine by an announcement over the speakers asking all available explorers to come to the auditorium.

As we follow the crow into the main area I can see on stage Mr Ketchum and Ms Oak are already sitting on the stage chairs. Mr Ketchum approaches the pedestal and clears his throat to gain the attention of the chatty crowd.

“So just an update team. Repairs on the SS Ketchum are almost done and we have added an additional armour feature and the underside and surrounding parts of the ship with the help of our Steel types. Although we will be moving slower and we might be behind schedule due to this, we deem it within our best interest to make it to our destination with an intact boat and preferably alive.

You have all had enough time to get your Pokémon acclimated to the low energy levels and the aggressiveness of the Pokémon in the area.

I must warn you, expect it to get worse. Those Serpents are just a taste of what is potentially to come. The deeper in we go, the more strange and dangerous we expect it to become.

You are excused except for the GYM leaders, researchers and ACES, professor Oak would like a moment of your time.”

With that we leave the room to continue practising without being told what to do. Which honestly is what I'm mostly doing anyway.

  ===

  Switch POV - Kelly Oak

“Okay guys thank you for giving me your time and attention. I’d like to suggest a few things that I would like you to keep in mind going forwards. Firstly is that under no circumstances are you to anger the Seel that our little trainer Jess supposedly ‘captured’. Its intelligence is far beyond what one would expect from a newborn pup.

Secondly I'd like to have you in pairs of at least two going forward when your teams are in the black zone. Line of sight at all times.

And finally, I’d like to tell you a little more about your actual mission in this Black Zone.

We theorise that the area is low in ambient type energy due to some sort of source as of yet unknown. The same goes for all the Black zones. I’d like us to try to discover what that source might be. This was Ash’s actual goal being in the Black Zone, not the Articuno which he had already reported catching. Any questions?”

The leaders and trainers all talk amongst themselves, some are in on the secret but most however are not and this comes as a surprise to them.

One grizzled trainer raises his hand

“Professor, why can’t we anger the Seel, does it matter that it is smarter than average?”

She frowns as she decides what exactly to tell the group

“Let's just say I don’t think the Seel is just a Seel. There are records of Pokémon being more than what they appear. I won’t use names but we all know what I refer to when I use the terms, Mythic and Legendary. I suspect that the Mythics hands are involved with that Seel just like the heroes of the past such as for the legend of ‘The Heroes of Many Battles’.

We don’t dabble with the plans of the gods. Just try to not piss the creature off okay.”

The grizzled man looks flustered and quietly nods in affirmation with arms crossed. He makes a sign for warding against evil spirits and sends a quick prayer to the gods to forgive them for his transgressions.

  ==============

Back to Seel - some hours later

It’s lunch time and I'm famished. I’m super happy with how I've progressed.

We’ve had a couple fights with various Pokémon during training and now we are headed back into open water. No more staring at more than one Aqua Chicken along the beachfront. The only one now is Anna’s little Penguin. I’d like to say little but the damn thing seems to be getting rather large.

What I don’t expect is that one of the trainers has decided to gift me with a big yummy feast. I mean Crawdaunt bisque… yes please! Not everyday you get to eat an evolved monster lobster.

I scarf down my food and am ready for more training. Physical training continues with my clones getting chased around with weight packs by Pokémon. There is a change though, I've given each of my clones a little bit more structure with instruction to EXPLODE when hit. It’s not just a free for all anymore and I finally get some gratuitous payback. The ice on the Houndours fur can attest to that fact.

As I continue to work on dodging I finally hear what I’ve been waiting on for a long time.

*DING - Evade learned - You are harder to hit after using this skill, attacks almost seem to slide off your body. Uses MP 10 per minute.*

And I feel like the dividends are paying off across the board

*DING - Sparky has learned Volt Tackle - Volt Tackle inflicts damage, and the user receives damage equal to ? of the damage done to the target, can paralyse. - 20 Mp per use.*

Both I and Sparky have also gained a level and one trainer level, but this time no bonuses :(, I need to work on that. So we are both level 20 now and I get an escape rope and 5 potions.

Additionally my egg has done… nothing. I need to find a moment alone where I can bring it out from storage to inspect it, but time to myself is something of a commodity that I'm sorely lacking right now.

So with these thought in mind a loud *HONGGGG* from the ship and we are again moving towards our destination.

What the destination is… I have no idea. I might need to find out a bit about the exploration goals. Free food is nice and all but what if they are here to harvest Seel fur and whale blubber?
