Chapter 18: A Narrow Escape

The group burst out of the temple and into the night, the cool air a stark contrast to the stifling heat of the battle. They didn’t stop running until they were deep in the forest, far from the ruins.

“Do you think they’re still following us?” Elliot asked, panting as he leaned against a tree.

Kael shook his head. “Not likely. But we can’t take any chances. We need to keep moving.”

Lila nodded, her face pale but determined. “We need to get the Aether Core piece back to the guild. Malakar can’t be allowed to get his hands on it.”

This book's true home is on another platform. Check it out there for the real experience.

Elliot looked down at the glowing orb in his hands. “What is this thing, really? Why is it so important?”

Kael and Lila exchanged a glance. “It’s a long story,” Kael said. “But for now, let’s just say it’s dangerous in the wrong hands.”

Elliot frowned but didn’t press further. He was too exhausted to argue.

The group continued their journey through the forest, their pace slower now but still urgent. As they walked, Elliot couldn’t shake the feeling that they were being watched. Every rustle of leaves, every snap of a twig, made him jump.

“Relax,” Kael said, noticing Elliot’s unease. “We’re safe for now.”

Elliot nodded, but he couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that had settled in his chest.
