A Name

  Chapter 42. A Name

Leonel glanced thoughtfully at the half-blood girl. They walked along a narrow mountain path, the only sounds in the silence being the wind and the occasional footsteps of their companions.

  — What’s your name? — he suddenly asked.

The girl flinched as if the question had pulled her out of deep thought. She lowered her gaze, then replied in barely a whisper:

  — I… don’t know.

Stan raised his eyebrows in surprise, Ethan frowned slightly, but it was Leonel who stopped and looked at her with genuine curiosity.

  — What do you mean, you don’t know?

  — No one has ever called me by a name, — she said quietly. — Only nicknames. Half-blood. Outcast. Worthless. Just the usual words they used for me…

Something tightened inside Leonel’s chest. How could someone live for so many years without even having a name? He exchanged glances with the others, then firmly declared:

  — That’s not right. You should have a name.

She looked at him hesitantly, as if she didn’t understand what he meant.

  — But what name?

  Ethan pondered.

  — It should be something that suits you…

  — Something special, — Stan added.

Leonel thought for a moment, then said:

  — Mirellis.

  The girl blinked in confusion.

  — Mir… meaning harmony and peace. Ellis… meaning nobility and light.

  — Mirellis… — she repeated softly, as if tasting the name.

It sounded gentle, yet there was hidden strength in it. She didn’t know if she was worthy of it… but at that moment, she wanted to believe she was.

  Leonel gave a faint smile.

  — You’re not just a half-blood anymore. Now you have a name.
