Chapter 24 — Doubt and Assurance

  Narrator: Gellia

At the gates of the village, where the wind still lazily stirred the black edges of the ash, I didn't speak right away. First, I methodically tightened the straps on my greaves, as if trying to gather my scattered thoughts into the same tight, hard weave that held my armor.

"I was in a very strange place," I said, without looking up. My voice sounded muffled beneath my visor. "As if in heaven itself, in the Hall of Judgment. I saw two gods. Two Tyrs. One was cold steel, a sentence without a heart, an icy truth. The second... he was a warmth that knows the price of weakness."

I raised my gaze to Priorin.

"And I realized: our path north, to Akolis, right now—it’s just death for the sake of stubbornness. We won't become just another set of monuments in the snow."

Priorin frowned, his fingers tightening on his axe handle.

"Are you suggesting we drop everything and turn back? After we barely survived? Rage at the order is the only thing guiding us, Gellia. If we turn, we lose ourselves."

"You’ll lose time, not yourselves," Flint’s voice had changed. It was deeper, ringing with a metallic edge that sent a chill down my spine. Krauser had seized the initiative, stepping forward. His posture held no exhaustion, only a predatory directness.

He swept his gaze over us like a general inspecting tools before a siege.

"Enough theology. Akolis can wait. We are going to the Wolf’s City. Hank isn't just mad; he is a key. Or an obstacle I will personally tear out by the roots."

Krauser fell silent, looking toward the dark forests where the Citadel lay hidden.

"My father, the Black Wolf, spent years building this order. If he’s alive—I will look him in the eye. If he’s dead—I will find his grave and take what belongs to me by right of blood. I’m not going to die on the doorstep of Akolis while men like Magellan play house in my home."

F (Faurgar) nodded, his eyes flashing coldly.

"It’s logical. Akolis is a fortress without keys. But the Monk’s gloves are an active interface to Milather’s power. Without them, we won't open a single door in the north. Krauser is right: the road to power and answers now lies through the City. Catching Hank is the only way to bolster our 'arsenal'."

Priorin sighed heavily, his hand resting on the rim of his shield.

"We’re heading into the jaws of bandits, chasing a toxic vortex. You call that 'bolstering'?"

"I call it returning home," Krauser snapped.

At that moment, I touched my hilt. My sword responded instantly—not just with warmth, but with a predatory, joyful vibration. A glint slid across the blade, momentarily forming a triumphant, crooked smile. The steel approved. It thirsted for the blood of those wearing its "brother" artifacts.

Priorin’s shield hummed in response—low and visceral, like a beast scenting its alpha's trail.

"They agree," I whispered. "It’s resonance, Priorin. The artifacts are leading us."

Priorin looked at his vibrating shield, then at Krauser.

"Then the choice wasn't made by us. Lead the way, Heir. Let's see what kind of throne you intend to take."

  The Mandate of Resonance.

  Key Analysis:

  •   The Death of the North: Gellia’s realization that Akolis is a "death trap for the sake of stubbornness" is her final act of maturity. She’s no longer a naive paladin; she’s a survivor who understands that you can’t strike a god with a broken spirit.

  •

  •   The Heir’s Shadow: Krauser taking the lead isn't just a change in narrator—it's a change in the story’s genre. We are moving into Political/High Fantasy. He isn't seeking his father; he is seeking his throne.

  •   The Artifacts' Vote: This is my favorite part. The Shield and the Sword didn't just vibrate—they approved. They are leading the group toward their "brothers" (the Gloves). The party is now a collective of humans and sentient steel.

  Questions for the readers:

  1.   Priorin’s Yielding: Do you think Priorin is okay with Krauser leading, or is he just waiting for the first mistake to take the axe back?

  2.

  3.   The Smile of the Blade: Gellia’s sword literally "smiled." Does that fascinate you or terrify you?

  4.

  5.   The Goal: The Wolf’s City. What do you expect to find in a city built by the "monster" of Part 1?
