“Rose I was so excited to meet you I forgot to tell you my name I’m Bhizzie Ironhyde. The doctor will see you both.”
“Thanks Bhizzie, it was nice to meet you.”
We walked down the hall to Lottie’s office, the door was open, Lottie was working on some paperwork. She looked up and smiled.
“Rose, I don't know how your society can function without computers, paperwork is the bane of medicine no matter what world you are in.”
“Hi Lottie, I’d like to introduce Arjun Votrie, he’s a friend of Sparky’s and he’s also a magical healer. I thought you two would have a lot to talk about.”
They looked at each other and neither said a word.
“Arjun, I’ve never seen a magical healer before. Do you use magical ingredients like an alchemist?”
“No Rose, just straight magic right into the body imbalance.”
“Lottie do you have any patients at the moment?”
“No Rose, you engineered this hospital for a town that has almost no sickness, so far I’ve treated a few people with minor injuries. I have eight apprentice nurses who so far have seen nothing worse than a broken bone. I’m sorry it’s not your fault, you saw a problem and tried to fix it.”
Arjun asked, “So the hospital was all Rose’s idea? Did she design it as well?”
“Yes, Rose found out I was going to open a Doctor’s office and wanted me to have all the tools I’d need to succeed, but then one of the gnome builders was seriously injured, right about to die. When Rose stepped in and saved his life.”
“No, No Lottie you saved his life all I did was give you the conditions you needed for that to happen.”
“Arjun, listen to this, this poor gnome is bleeding out from five different parts of his body, so Rose jumps us to a different world, she pauses all the gnomes' bodily functions. When I explain to her I have no idea how gnome anatomy works, she transforms the gnome into a human. So I can sew him up. Then she transforms him back into a gnome. All the time claiming that I healed him. What do you say to that?”
“I see why Sparky chose her for an apprentice, he’s never had one before. Always said apprentices are too much trouble.”
“Yeah well he still says that. Besides I thought you two might actually want to talk about medicine. I’ll see if Juliet has any sick people over in her world.”
I stare off into the void hello Juliet, Juliet.
“Hello Rose, what’s up?”
“Hi Juliet, I was just wondering if you have any sick or injured people.”
“Old MacDonald has a bad cold, how’s that?”
“Where is he, Juliet? Is he at home or work?”
“He’s in the barn, he won't stay home, saying that would just make him feel worse. But he’s sneezing and coughing and is going to make us all sick in the end.”
“Perfect, I have a healer and a doctor, here looking for a patient, I bring them right over. Maybe send someone to ask Dr Denton if he has any cases that aren't completely cured yet.”
“Lottie, Arjun, I have an older farmer with a bad cold. How’s that for a start, I also asked Juliet to talk to Dr Denton to see if he has any patients that aren’t cured yet. Are you ready to jump into her world?”
“Just let me get my medical bag, I have three magical bakes, I’d like to test them out.”
“Arjun. Is there anything that you need?”
“No, thank you, Rose. My healing is just my magic.”
“All set Rose.”
“Perfect, each of you take an arm.”
With that we jumped to Juliet’s barn. As soon as we arrived the first thing I heard was coughing, then sneezing. We went in that direction. Old MacDonald was mucking out a cell.
“Erm Mr MacDonald, I brought a couple of healers to help you.”
“Why, you never did before?”
“I never knew any healers, now I know two.”
Lottie was taking some bread from her bag and ripped off a small piece.
“Mr MacDonald my name is Dr Li, I have three magical breads, I just like you to try a small piece of each, this first one is Stormgrain Bread.”
He ate it and then started coughing again.
“This one is Crystal Rye.”
He ate that one and after a few seconds started sneezing.”
“This is Combined Bread it has both, Stormgrain and Crystal Rye.”
He ate that one and said.
“That’s the one, that did the trick doc. How much do I owe you?”
“Wonderful, I am so glad you are feeling better and you don’t owe me anything, you helped test my magical cures and for that I am so grateful.”
Then Dr Denton walked in.
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
“Rose I heard you brought an Earth Doctor and a healer, I have two cases that I could really use their help on, I take it you are them, I’m Daniel Denton.”
He shook hands with both, while I made the introductions.
“The first case is Farmer Jones whose leg was trampled by an ox. I did my best to set the broken bones but from what I was feeling there just isn’t enough bone to ever knit together. Rose, would you please jump us to his house? It's the third farm on the eastern road.”
I jumped the four of us, Mrs Jones opened the door for us and brought us to the bedroom where you could see the poor farmer was in a lot of pain. Lottie gave him the three breads in reverse order. When he’d eaten the stormgrain, the last she’d offered him. A look of relief flooded his face. He made to get out of the bed, but Lottie and Denton, both told him to stay put, while they examined his leg.
“It looks like Stormgrain bread can heal broken bones, Dr Li.”
“Yes Dr Denton.”
Mrs Jones looked worried and asked, “How much do we owe you doctors?”
“Nothing, we are just trying to test these magical cures, I’m so happy that it worked. I wonder if one of them would have been able to cure Mossbeard when he was injured so badly, if he was conscious that is.”
Dr Denton told Mr Jones to just start walking no heavy work, until after he checked in with him tomorrow. Then we portaled to another patient that Denton was worried about, just seemed to get worse and worse. He thought it was a hernia.
“Dr Li, I can feel it, and I’ve tried pushing it back into place, but it just seems to be getting worse. Can you operate on the patient.”
“We’ll need blood but I assume that you can just author bags of blood like we used for Mossbeard. But first I’d like to try the three magical cures I have, if none of those work. Healer Arjun should try before I cut her open.”
Lottie gave the patient, Mrs Eymen, each of the three magical bakes, but unfortunately none of them had any effect. Then Arjun put his hand on the slight bulge in her abdomen. I could see the magic pouring out of him, after a few minutes I saw sweat starting to form on his forehead. When he finally took his hand way the bulge had gone down dramatically
“Arjun are you doing something besides pouring magic into the area, like a spell or a visualization?”
“No, I just pour magic into the area, there is no spell. I wouldn’t know what to visualize. I just try to think positive thoughts like this is healing. But that is as much as I can do for the day, but I’d be happy to come back tomorrow if you’ll jump me here.”
“Would you mind instructing Sparky’s other apprentice, she’s just learning magical fields but she is much better at it then I am. I can go get her right now.”
I jumped back to the tower and found Opal reading in the library.
“Hi honey how did the lesson go with Draco?”
“Good Rose.”
“How much magic do you have left?”
“Eighty seven percent Rose.”
“Would you like to try an elderly lady who isn’t feeling well get better?”
“Yes Rose.”
“Good Girl, come I just have to check with Draco then we’ll jump from his lair.”
I was just about to knock.
“Come ladies.”
“Hi Draco, I have a healer in Juliet’s world who heals by pouring magic into the area, he’s offered to teach Opal. Is that alright to try? When should she stop so as not to feel wiped out?”
“Yes you should try Opal, about fifty percent of magicians have healing magic, so it’s worth trying just to find out if you do or don’t. But promise you won’t go below forty percent.”
“I promise, Draco.”
Then we jumped back. I introduced Opal to Dr Denton and Arjun. Arujun explained how he sent his magic into Mrs Eymen. Then Opal tried, I could see her magic pouring out of her forehead, not her hand like Arjun had. After a few minutes she stopped and the bulge was gone.
Dr Denton and Lottie both examined Mrs Eymen and cautiously declared her cured. But Denton advised she take it very easy, and he would come back tomorrow morning and check on her progress. I don’t think either Denton or Lottie had too much faith in magical healing. But I’d be willing to bet that Arujun and Opal had cured Mrs Eymen permanently.
Lottie and Dr Denton were talking about her clinic so I jumped Opal home.
“That was a wonderful thing you did for her Opal, thank you. How much magic do you have left?”
“Forty Eight percent Rose”
“Wow how did you know to stop?”
“I don’t know, I just knew that she was cured, so I stopped.”
“That’s great honey, run down and tell Draco how well you did, you are amazing! I have to go back and get Lottie and Arjun.”
Then I jumped back.
“Rose, how can Dr Denton get in touch with me if he needs anything?”
“Just give me one second.”
I jumped back to the tower and grabbed two pieces of magical paper and paired them. Then I jumped back, giving each a piece of the paper, quickly showing them both how to use it. Then I jumped us all back to Lottie’s office. I left the two of them discussing magical healing. I portaled back to the store. Mossbeard was still painting.
“Hey Mossbeard do we have any activated clinic paintings?”
“None that are activated but I do have a few dry unactivated ones.”
I took one of those and portaled to the tower. Opal was back to reading in the library.
“I’m sorry to keep bothering you sweetheart, but could you please activate this painting and drawing for me.”
“Sure Rose.”
She activated them both, then I jumped to Juliet’s World and did a locate:Dr Denton. I jumped to his location. I explained what the wallet and the painting did.
“I have no idea if these will work between worlds, but I thought it was worth the try, in case of emergency if this works you’ll be able to portal directly to the clinic. You won’t have to wait to find Juliet or myself to jump you. Would you like to give it a try?”
He touched the paper in the wallet and portaled us to the clinic. I waved to Bhizzie and we went down the hall to tell Lottie the good news. I thought the portal network was done, but I have two important portals still to put in, but that can wait for the morning. Wyldwood and Juliet’s world would both be safer if the two doctors could easily portal back and forth.
Before Sparky had left he told me no civic projects while he was away, but technically he said ‘don’t get caught up in any more civic projects’ so that doesn’t prohibit me from finishing an existing project.
