Interlude XIX: The Protocol of Monsters (part1/2)

[Sara POV] Year 5, Day 202

Sara watched Dominos, the poisoner lady, sleeping. Still. Peaceful. Safe.

Three days now since friend arrived.

[Friend is on edge. Keeps to deeper parts of cave. Avoids entrance where snakes rest. Small fear shows when stronger sounds come from outside. When ground shakes from monster fights. When something roars too close.]

Sara had tried making things better. Multiple times. Different approaches. Different ideas.

[Most attempts failed. Friend stayed nervous, scared, uncomfortable. Progress minimal.]

Dress introduction went well though. That worked. Dominos had listened to chain's story. Had understood. Had been sympathetic.

But Sara remembered something else. When Sara explained about feeding. About thirty-four cities. About millions dead.

[Almost no reaction. Friend nodded. Said 'oh.' Then moved to different topic. Probably didn't register. Probably couldn't understand scale. Too big. Too abstract. Brain refused to process.]

Sara wasn't sure how to fix that. How to make friend comfortable. How to be better host.

Four more days left. Then Dominos leaving. Back to Central. Back to normal life.

[Need to make it better. Need friend to have good time. Need friend to want to come back. Not just survive visit. Actually enjoy visit.]

Sara thought hard. What could help? What would work?

  Then dress spoke. Suggestion forming.

?Blood! Blood blood.? Excited. Eager to help.

[Oh. Food suggestion. Dress solution to most things. But good solution. Food does help. Makes things better. Shows care. Such a good boy. Helping Sara already.]

Sara thought about that. What special food? What would impress? What would show proper effort?

[Land dragon hearts. Main delicacy. Holds most dragon power. Expensive. Rare. Worth more than gold by weight. Perfect gift food.]

And honey. Emperor bee honey. High-level monster product. Costs fortune. Tastes like heaven from what Sara heard.

[Sara will hunt dragons. Snakes will collect honey. Then make proper feast. Show friend Sara is good host. Show friend this visit is special.]

  Decision made.

Sara launched from the cave. Morning hunt. Professional work. Important mission.

Dragon hunting. Gift collection. Systematic approach.

[Need gift for each snake. All 37 of them. Proper gifts. Dragon hearts and corpses. Show appreciation. Show Sara values their work. Professional courtesy.]

Land dragons first. Nearby. The stupid territorial ones who'd refused Sara's deal. Perfect targets.

Sara hunted systematically—fast intercepts, clean kills, hearts extracted, corpses stored. Professional work.

Eleven land dragons total. Then—hard to find more.

[Where did they all go? Sara been hunting here for weeks. Feeding snakes. Maybe over-hunted? Stupid dragons should grow faster. Sara has snakes to feed. Need sustainable population. This is problem.]

Sara expanded search. Different targets. Different dragon types.

Wyverns. Few of those flying near haunt edges. Sara hunted them. Fast intercepts. Clean kills. Hearts extracted. Corpses stored.

Various other dragon types. Small ones. Medium ones. Whatever Sara could find. Each one counted. Each one collected properly.

Twenty-six dragons total. Still not enough.

[Need 37. One for each snake. Can't give gifts to only some. That's unfair. That's bad leadership. Need more dragons. Where to find?]

Then Sara remembered. Large river. Not far from haunt. Water dragons lived there. Aquatic types. Different species. Good targets.

Sara flew toward river. Fast flight. Time running.

Large river. Wide. Deep. Water dragons visible. Swimming. Hunting. Living their lives.

New hunting ground. Aquatic targets. Different approach needed.

  Perfect targets. Many of them.

  Sara pulled dress. Focused. Connected.

"Dress. Can help Sara fish? Use as fishing line? Pull water dragons out?"

?Blood! Blood blood!? Dress was excited. Eager.

[Oh. Sara almost forgot dress is boy. Boys like fishing. Sara should do more activities dress likes. Good to know. Make dress happy. Keep dress engaged.]

The golden chain extended from dress. Long. Hundreds of meters. Growing. Stretching. Reaching toward water like living thing. Like whip. Like fishing line made of gold and blood and ancient power.

Chain entered water. Moved. Hunted. Found target.

Wrapped around water dragon. Caught it. Pulled.

The dragon fought. Strong. Powerful. S-rank water monster. Not easy prey.

But chain was stronger. Much stronger. Legendary artifact. Ancient power. Created by Daemon Lord. Fed on thirty-four cities. No water dragon could resist.

Chain pulled dragon from water. Fast. Efficient. Brought it to shore where Sara waited.

Sara killed it. Extracted heart. Stored corpse. Professional work.

?Blood! Blood blood!? Dress was joyful. Excited.

[Dress enjoys hunting. Wants more. More fishing. More dragons. Such a good boy. Makes work faster. Makes collection easier. Good partnership.]

They worked together. Dress fishing. Sara killing and processing. Systematic. Professional. Fast.

Ten more water dragons. Fifteen. Eighteen.

Dress was enjoying this. Wanted more. More fishing. More fun.

Sara kept going. Nineteen total from the river.

But looking at the hearts after—some were quite small. The last few dragons had been young maybe. Smaller species. Sara had been forced to scavenge. Take whatever she could find just to hit the numbers.

[Not all hearts equal size. Not all equal quality. This is problem for fair distribution. Snakes might notice. Might feel cheated if some get small hearts while others get large. Bad for morale. Bad for leadership.]

Total collection: forty-five dragons. Eleven land. Five air—wyverns flying near haunt edges. Ten various other types. Nineteen water. Forty-five hearts total. Forty-five corpses.

More than needed. But gave options. Flexibility. Better to have excess than shortage.

[Mission complete. Proper gifts acquired. Can select best hearts. Make fair distribution. Sara can be good boss. Show appreciation. Professional relationship maintained.]

?Blood!? Joy. Satisfaction. Fishing is nice. Different from city feeding. Should do this more.

[Yes. Fishing with dress is efficient. Useful skill. Sara approves. Also solves problem. Sara over-hunted land dragons near haunt—getting hard to find more. Snakes need feeding. Aquatic dragons are different population. Different source. Better population management. Use multiple dragon types. Sustainable. Smart. Will do this regularly.]

Sara returned to the cave. Approached entrance. Mission complete. Time for distribution.

All 37 snakes were there. Waiting. Every single one. All gathered near entrance instead of patrolling or resting in usual spots.

[Oh. All of them here. That's unusual. Did honey mission go badly? Emperor bees are dangerous. Maybe snakes had rough morning?]

Honeycomb sections were visible. Massive pieces. Emperor bee honey. Golden. Perfect. Mission successful despite apparent difficulty.

But the snakes looked... tired maybe? Some had injuries visible. Burns. Stings. Battle damage. Emperor bees had fought back hard apparently.

[Mission was difficult. All snakes needed to work together. Dangerous collection. But successful. Professional work. Sara is impressed.]

Sara landed. "Sara is back. Honey collection successful?"

All 37 snakes nodded in sync. Yes. Successful. Completed. But hard work. Very hard.

"Good work. Sara brought payment. First part now. Corpses. Bulk food. Then friend will give hearts later. Main prize. Dessert. Understand?"

The snakes perked up. Attention sharpening. Understanding. Agreement. Yes. Good structure. Professional.

Sara pulled corpses from Item Box. All forty-five. Mountain of dragon bodies. Piled high. Massive display. Everything collected. Bulk payment. Fair distribution.

  "Eat."

The snakes moved together. Feeding frenzy. Professional efficiency despite the gross display—tearing, crushing, consuming. Blood everywhere. Bones cracking. Flesh disappearing. Mountain of corpses versus horde of hungry serpents. Efficient destruction of dragon bodies.

Ten minutes. That's all it took. Entire mountain gone. All forty-five corpses consumed. Nothing left. Just satisfied snakes and clean ground.

[Very efficient. Sara is impressed. Snakes work fast when motivated. Professional eating.]

Sara went inside cave. Time to wake friend. Time to explain plan. Time for proper introduction. Better approach this time.

[Friend will meet snakes after feeding. When they're satisfied. Less aggressive. More calm. Better timing. Sara learned.]

Dominos was already awake. Had heard the sounds outside. The feeding. The gross display. Looking bit concerned.

Round two. Proper introduction this time. Sara would do better.

  "What was that noise?"

"Snakes eating. Payment for good work. Dragon corpses. Forty-five of them. Very efficient eaters. All gone in ten minutes."

Dominos processed that. "Forty-five dragons? In ten minutes?"

"Yes. Snakes work fast. Professional efficiency. Sara is impressed."

[Friend looks bit shocked. Maybe Sara should not mention efficiency of mass consumption. Maybe that's scary information. Sara still learning what's scary versus what's impressive.]

Sara prepared coffee. The good kind. Expensive. Proper morning drink.

Dominos drank it slowly. Relaxed. More comfortable than first days. Fear diminishing with time. "Good coffee. Thank you."

Sara felt bit nervous. [Need to explain plan. Need to apologize first maybe. About snakes. About scary first night. About everything.]

"Sara sorry. About first night. Too many snakes at once. Too scary. Sara didn't think properly. Wanted to show everything. Excited. Made mistakes."

Dominos looked surprised. "You're apologizing? Sara, it's okay. I was just... overwhelmed. New experience. Needed time to adjust. I'm better now. Really."

[Friend forgives. Friend understands. Sara is relieved.]

Sara continued. Still needed to explain. "Sara has plan today. To make things better. To show friend snakes are good workers. Not just scary monsters. Professional force. Sara's security."

She explained carefully. The hunting. The dragon collection. The honey mission snakes completed. The gift exchange plan.

Dominos considered. Fear still present but... curiosity too. Interest. "Okay. Let's try. But slowly. One at a time maybe?"

"Yes. Slow. Controlled. Professional. Sara learned. Sara will do better this time."

[Friend trusts Sara. Friend willing to try. Sara will not mess this up. Sara will make it work.]

They went outside together. Sara holding Dominos's hand. Support. Reassurance. Physical connection showing safety.

All 37 snakes waited. Every single one. Satisfied now. Corpses eaten. But still expectant. Waiting. Main prize coming. Dessert time.

Sara spoke to Dominos. Clear. Direct. Explaining hierarchy.

"These are Sara's people. Sara protects them. Sara feeds them. They protect Sara's home. They listen to Sara. Understand?"

  Dominos nodded. Processing. Understanding structure.

Sara continued. Important part. "Sara tells them to also protect friend. To listen to friend. Because friend is Sara's friend. Hierarchy is: Sara first. Friend second. Snakes third. Understand?"

The snakes nodded. All 37. Agreement. Understanding. Professional acceptance.

Dominos managed words. Voice small. Nervous. "They... understand language?"

"Yes. Smart creatures. S-rank intelligence. Not stupid beasts. Professional workers. Sara's security force."

[Frame it properly. Make them workers. Employees. Not nightmare monsters. Professional relationship. That's better. That's less scary.]

Sara pulled dragon hearts from Item Box. Sorting while pulling. Assessing sizes. Quality. Selecting the best.

Thirty-seven largest and most equal in size. Those came out. Arranged carefully. Best specimens. Fairest distribution. Each snake getting properly matched reward. Professional equality.

The remaining eight—smaller hearts, lesser quality—stayed in storage. Never pulled out. Not wasted. Saved for later. But not good enough for this gift. Not proper for showing respect.

"These are special. Dragon hearts. Main delicacy. Real prize. Friend will give one to each snake. Shows respect. Shows appreciation. Shows friend recognizes their hard work for honey mission. Professional gift. Proper payment."

Dominos stared at pile of hearts. At 37 massive snakes waiting. At situation.

"All of them? I give to all of them?"

"Yes. One each. Equal treatment. Fair distribution. Friend is second in hierarchy. Friend gives rewards. Sara established this. Sara said so. Friend has authority."

[Teaching friend how to boss. How to command. How to give rewards. Monster hierarchy lesson. Criminal underworld logic. Same principles.]

Dominos took first heart. Careful. Nervous. Approached nearest snake.

Held out dragon heart. Offering. Hands shaking slightly.

The snake took it delicately. Gentle. Careful. No aggression. Then swallowed. Visible satisfaction. Pure pleasure at receiving real prize. Main delicacy. Dessert.

[Good response. Snake is grateful. This is working. Friend doing well.]

Dominos gave hearts to more snakes. One by one. Each snake receiving. Each snake responding with gentle acceptance. With gratitude. With respect.

By the tenth heart, Dominos's hands stopped shaking. By twentieth, she was moving confidently. By thirty-seventh, she looked almost comfortable.

[Progress. Real progress. Friend is commanding snakes. Friend is distributing rewards. Friend is acting as second-in-hierarchy. Perfect. Exactly what Sara wanted.]

After all hearts distributed, snakes moved together. Coordinated. Retrieving their payment. Their gift.

Honeycomb sections. Massive pieces. Emperor bee honey. Multiple sections. Enough for proper feast.

They brought honey forward. Placed it before Dominos. Gift. Professional exchange. Payment complete.

Dominos stared at honey. Recognition. Understanding value. "This is... this is emperor bee honey. Real emperor bee honey."

"Yes," Sara confirmed. "Very expensive. Very rare. Very dangerous collection. They did this for Sara. To give to friend. To show respect."

She gestured. "Friend should taste. Best honey in world. Worth more than gold by weight."

Dominos broke off small piece. Tasted carefully.

Her expression transformed. Shock. Awe. Pleasure. "This is... this is incredible. I've heard about this but never tasted. This is..."

She couldn't find words. Just kept tasting. Small pieces. Savoring.

[Friend likes it. Friend is happy. Gift worked. Introduction working. Sara is pleased.]

Sara settled next to Dominos. Teaching moment now. Important lesson.

Criminal underworld logic. Monster logic. Same thing basically.

"Listen. Friend needs to understand how this works. How hierarchy works in monster world. In criminal world. Same rules."

  Dominos looked up. Listening. Processing.

"Sara is big boss. What Sara says is law. Nobody questions. Nobody challenges. Sara strongest. Sara rules."

The snakes nodded. All 37. Agreement. Understanding. Respect visible.

"Friend is Sara's friend. That makes friend second in hierarchy. Above snakes. Above other monsters here. Friend's words carry Sara's authority. Sara said so. So it is."

Sara gestured at snakes. "Snakes are third. Workers. Security. Sara's people. They protect. They listen. They follow orders from Sara and from Sara's friend. Professional structure. Clear hierarchy. No confusion. No challenge. Simple system that works."

Dominos processed that. Understanding crystallizing. "So... I can give them orders? They'll listen?"

"Yes. Friend can command. They will obey. Sara established this. Sara said so. That's how monster hierarchy works. Boss says. Everyone follows. Simple. Direct. Effective."

[Teaching friend how monster world works. How criminal world works. Same principles. Same structure. Power establishes hierarchy. Hierarchy establishes order. Order makes safety.]

Dominos looked at snakes. Testing. Uncertain. "Sit?"

All 37 snakes settled into coils. Perfect obedience.

  "Stand?"

They rose. Ready. Attentive. Waiting for next command.

Dominos's expression showed something. Realization maybe. Understanding. "They actually listen. They actually obey."

"Yes. Because Sara said so. Sara's word is law here. Sara gave friend authority. So friend has authority. That's how it works."

[Friend understanding. Friend getting less scared. Friend seeing snakes as workers. As subordinates. Not as nightmare threats. Progress. Real progress.]

Then Dominos tried something. "Can you... show me a trick? Something simple?"

The snakes looked at each other. Consultation. Then—

One snake started moving. Complex pattern. Weaving. Dancing almost. The others joined. Synchronized movement. Beautiful despite their size. Despite their nature. Coordinated. Professional.

Dominos watched. Amazed. "You taught them this?"

"No. They learned themselves. Smart creatures. Like entertainment. Like showing off. Natural behavior when safe. When respected. When treated well."

The performance continued. More snakes joining. More complexity. More coordination.

Dominos started teaching. Actually teaching. Showing different patterns. Different movements. The snakes learned. Adapted. Copied. Improved.

Hours passed like this. Dominos and snakes. Teaching. Learning. Playing almost.

Sara watched. [Friend is not scared anymore. Friend is comfortable. Friend is commanding snakes. Friend is teaching tricks. Success. Real success. Sara is very pleased.]
