V1: Chapter 7: The New Normal

Falofhan Boarding School, a one-of-a-kind school, a school where the actual reality of the place is up to question. I’m your host, Lei Bo, and will be your ever-present guide and narrator, whether I want to or not. In case you forgot, we met Quinton Young, a shy and introverted boy, excited to go to his new school. However, he did not know that the school he was signed up for was an all-girl’s boarding school! After the initial shock and a name change later, Qu Yi went on a tour with her roommates, Wen Chou, and Yan Liang. Together they ran into many eccentric characters that are sure to reappear during their days at Falofhan.

They met Yuan Shao, their snobby president, Cao Cao, the president who cares about being the best, Sun Ce, the president that likes to fight with a sexist attitude, Liu Bei, a childish and na?ve president, hoping to make friends with all, Dong Zhuo, a corrupt child president, Lu Bu, a sleepy and tired president, who appears harmless and kind, Zhang Jue, a calm and soft-spoken president whose classmates are zealots to say the least, and last but not least, Yan Gang, not a president, but the girl who has a bone to pick with Yuan Shao’s class.

With all this in place, it is Qu Yi’s first morning on campus, and she has new schedules to get used to, a new gender to accept, and new classmates to meet, and the fact you’re still here seems to mean you want to witness it.

Now I know the question you may be thinking. “What is this fine good looking attractive narrator doing at this time?” My personal grooming habits are ones that cannot be exposed, so instead, let’s watch how Qu Yi is doing.

We begin in Qu Yi’s room. Qu Yi is fast asleep in her new bed. Her long brown hair sprawls all around her. She is hugging her pillow, some drool spilling onto it. Meanwhile, her two roommates watch her sleep intently. The first one is kneeling by her face so she could be eye level with Qu Yi. She can’t help but smile. Her shoulder length black hair sways slightly as she tilts her head, her cyan eyes watch Qu Yi with eager interest. She wears a green button up pajama top with matching pajama pants. Her name is Yan Liang.

The other roommate has short, light-teal hair that curves up near her neck. She is sitting in a chair backwards, leaning her arms on the backrest. She wears a light-yellow T-shirt with gray shorts. She has a confident smirk watching her roommate, specifically watching the drool. This girl is known as Wen Chou. “When do you think we should wake her up for breakfast?” she whispers to her fellow awake roommate.

Yan Liang lays her head on the bed with Qu Yi. “Not sure. She looks so peaceful when she’s asleep.” She can’t help but close her eyes and cover her mouth. “We were so lucky to get such a cute roommate, Wen Chou!” she lets out a whisper-shout to her teal-haired comrade.

“Yesterday was a bit much for her, trying to get her to wake up for dinner was tough.”

Yan Liang can’t help but smile even more. “When she was half asleep as we tried to get her to dinner! Ah, she was so funny! What was that name she said? Quin Ton?”

“I wonder if that was a crush she had back at her old school!” Wen Chou can’t help but chuckle, imagining Qu Yi blushing around a male student.

Yan Liang smiles, thinking about the idea, “Oh! Maybe! We can ask her on the way to breakfast!”

“Yeah, but…” She tears up and clenches her first. “I-I can’t do it! I can’t wake her up! She’s so adorable sleeping! I just want to protect her!” She points to her roommate. “Yan Liang, you wake her up.”

“A-Ah! But…” She looks at her face and blushes. “She looks so peaceful! I can’t!”

“I guess it can’t be helped. I’ll get ready then.” Wen Chou stands and walks over to her cabinet.

Yan Liang turns to Wen Chou and lets out a gasp, “Wen Chou! What if she feels left out that we didn’t get ready with her?”

Wen Chou stops, her imagination briefly envisioning a sad Qu Yi tearing up asking why she got ready early. “Y-You’re right,” she stutters out. “There’s no way- wait a second, she has never cried.” She looks to Yan Liang. “I think our imagination is making stuff up due to how cute she looks sleeping. I think she can take one of us waking her up.”

Yan Liang can’t help but blush and scratch the back of her head. “O-Oh yeah, maybe she wouldn’t be that type of person.”

“Only way to know for sure is to talk to her more, so, you wake her up!”

“H-Hey! Don’t put this on me! I don’t want to seem like the mean one! That’s your thing!”

“Mean?! What are you talking about?!” Wen Chou whisper-shouts back.

During this exchange, Qu Yi lies on her bed with her eyes closed. Her mind thinking of a plan. “Okay, I’m not sure when is the right time for me to wake up. They’ve been doing this for like four minutes. How can I pretend to wake up naturally, so they won’t think I’m tricking them?”

You see, now would be a great chance to have our opening theme song with a splendid bit of animation. A solid joke that sells the scene as we cut away and cut back after the event is settled, but, we’re not an animated medium, so, I guess I have to explain a way out of this comedic situation.

  Qu Yi wakes up.

Yan Liang stands up quickly as Qu Yi stretches, her eyes closed trying to make it seem that she woke up naturally. “Oh, I’m sorry, did we wake you?” Yan Liang asks concerned.

“H-Huh?” Qu Yi blinks a few times, trying to sell she wasn’t awake. “I don’t think so.” A smooth liar at this time.

“You sure were sleepy!” Wen Chou laughs as she jumps on her own bed in the corner. “We woke you up for dinner and you were half asleep the whole time!”

Qu Yi nods thinking to herself, “I thought this was all some crazy dream I’d wake up from, but I guess this is still reality, which means…” She looks down to her chest blushing. “I’m still a girl, however, I can put up with that if it means I can be friends with them.” She smiles at Yan Liang and Wen Chou.

Yan Liang perks up, her hands together with fingers interlaced. “Qu Yi, I was wondering if you wanted to get ready together today. Since you had a bit of struggle last time, I thought it would be nice if we did!”

Qu Yi smiles, thinking of how they helped her when she struggled to change into her uniform yesterday. “U-Uh, yeah! I’d appreciate it!”

Wen Chou gives Qu Yi a thumbs up. “All right, the shower is yours. Me and Liang took one last night, so just take your shower and we’ll get that breakfast!”

Qu Yi’s soul practically cracks. “U-Uh, shower... R-Right!” She looks down to her chest and blushes. “I-I have to… look at my new body…?” she mutters to herself.

Yan Liang notices the sudden discomfort in her new roommate, “Is everything okay Qu Yi? You seemed to tense up when Wen Chou said shower?”

The once-boy turns to Yan Liang slowly, “Y-Yeah, about that…” She looks down, twiddling her fingers. “How can I word it?” She thinks to herself, she didn’t exactly want help in the shower! But she isn’t sure if she can handle looking at her new “situation” so quickly after the change.

Yan Liang places her finger to her chin, trying to brainstorm why Qu Yi would be so uncomfortable about it. “Oh! Would you prefer to take a bath?”

A lightbulb practically illuminates above Qu Yi. “Yes! I-I actually, prefer baths. I-I don’t like the idea of, er, slipping!” In her mind she feels she could clean herself without looking down much better.

Yan Liang can’t help but let out a snicker. “A-Ah! I’m sorry Qu Yi, I’m not laughing. That was just such a “Qu Yi” thing to say!”

Qu Yi blinks a few times looking at her. “E-Eh?” A ‘Qu Yi thing’ to say?

Wen Chou laughs. “Newbie! Baths are cool also!” She gives her a thumbs up, “No reason to be shy about it!”

Qu Yi nods, “U-Uh right! S-Sorry, this is just, new still! A-Anyway, I should get started on that!” She walks into the bathroom and closes the door.

Yan Liang looks to Wen Chou with an annoyed expression. “Don’t walk in on her this time.”

Qu Yi’s plan is somewhat solid, fill the tub, add bubbles, clean self, using the bubbles to hide any accidental side eye, and as far as my narration is concerned, it works out perfectly fine!

What? You expect me to narrate the specifics? What’s wrong with you? This isn’t THAT kind of story! Qu Yi manages to get her clean underwear on and avoids all uncomfortable glances at her body.

Qu Yi stares at herself in the mirror. Her hair is still soaking wet, and she isn’t sure exactly what to do. “Um, wait, what did my mom do sometimes?” She thinks back to her life at home. When her mom was drying her hair, she wrapped it like a turban! Qu Yi takes a look down at her towel. “Uh, Now, how am I going to do this…?” After a few attempts, she can’t figure out the mystery of the towel turban hair. However, having more trust and confidence in her new friend’s acceptance, she creaks open the bathroom door. “Um, G-Girls? Can I-” She is face to face with Wen Chou, about to open the door. “Um.”

Wen Chou blinks a few times before she scratches the back of her head with an awkward smile. “Um, sorry about, er, wanting to check, but I was worried you might have drowned.”

Yan Liang is still positioned in an attempt to pull Wen Chou back. “I’m sorry about this again, Qu Yi! Wen Chou can be clueless sometimes!”

Wen Chou blushes and turns back to Yan Liang. “I-I was just worried! You needed our help last time, and you were too shy to ask!”

Qu Yi smiles. “U-Uh, well you have good... intuition? I was about to ask. Um…” She opens the door more and looks between her towel and her hair. “H-How do I do the towel turban?”

“Huh?” Both Wen Chou and Yan Liang look to each other and back to Qu Yi. Smiles grow on their faces as they look back to their new roommate. “You really have some strange things you don’t know how to do, don’t you?” Wen Chou laughs.

Yan Liang nods. “Well, I’ll gladly help you! Thank you for asking!”

Yan Liang begins teaching the elusive ways of the hair turban to Qu Yi. Within about five minutes, they are done, and Qu Yi has learned the basics of the towel-turban.

Yan Liang raises an eyebrow. “If you don’t mind me asking, Qu Yi, how did you get your hair dried back when you were at home? Your hair is long enough that you would need to do something special to dry it.”

Qu Yi blinks awkwardly, being put on the spot. “U-Um! M-My mom helped me with it. Y-Yeah.”

Wen Chou smiles smugly. “You know between this and help with your uniform Yan Liang was right. You are quite the momma’s girl!” She chuckles.

Qu Yi quickly turns to Yan Liang. “Eh?”

Yan Liang holds her hands up defensively. “T-That’s out of context Qu Yi! I just said last night you may have relied on your mom a lot! W-Which is why you may be so shy about things here.”

Qu Yi thinks to herself. “W-Well she isn’t far off, about a ‘momma’s girl’ comment. E-Except I wasn’t a girl! Al-Although.” She thinks back to me telling her yesterday to let them assume things to fill in the gaps in her life as a female.” She blushes and smiles before speaking up. “U-Uh, well I suppose you are right. A-Anyway, H-How long will it take my hair to dry?”

Yan Liang raises an eyebrow. “Well, it can’t exactly dry in the turban! Remember? We must fluff it with the towel then comb through it.”

Qu Yi stares in shock. That, is something she didn’t know! It’s not like she ever had conversations with her mom about how she dries her hair, and as the only child she didn’t have any sisters to grow up with. Her mind rushes to think of an excuse. “O-Oh! A-Actually…” She twiddles her fingers hoping this will work. “I-I kind of just almost fell asleep whenever it happened back at home.”

Wen Chou and Yan Liang look at Qu Yi and think of yesterday when she fell asleep instantly and was impossible to wake up Yan Liang speaks up first. “That… makes too much sense.”

“No wonder she doesn’t know,” Wen Chou adds.

Qu Yi breathes a sigh of relief, having narrowly avoided disaster in her eyes.

“Well,” Yan Liang continues, “If you’re hungry, we can go to breakfast with you wearing that if you want? Then we can finish it up here?”

Qu Yi blushes, shaking her head. “I-I don’t want to be stared at and mocked!”

Wen Chou frowns. “Who would dare mock you?!” She punches her fist into her hand. “I will show them a thing or two!”

Yan Liang holds up her hands to calm Wen Chou. “I think she means she just doesn’t want to be stared at!” Yan Liang thinks for a moment, before she smiles to Qu Yi. “Well, if you wouldn’t mind.” she twiddled her fingers a bit, “I’ve always wanted to style someone else’s hair! I also have a hair dryer that will dry your hair quickly! Plus, I can use a curling iron afterwards!”

Qu Yi repeats, “Style someone else’s hair?” She raises and eyebrow and stares to Wen Chou. “But, what about Wen Chou?”

“Pffft!” Yan Liang let out, biting her lip, “Wen Chou’s hair is too short to do anything with!” She smiles to Qu Yi. Yours, on the other hand, is so long and cute! I’ll just try something simple, okay?”

Wen Chou only responds with a shrug, clearly not interested.

Qu Yi blushes. “Uh, well, do you think I’ll be stared at less?” She can’t help but avert her eyes. “Can you still keep it pretty normal?”

Yan Liang gives her a reassuring smile as she gives a thumbs up. “Of course!” She pulls a stool from the room and sets it in front of the bathroom mirror. “In fact, you tell me to stop whenever you want! Or give me directions on something specific you want.” Yan Liang jumps up, clearly excited, causing confusion for Qu Yi.

“A-Are you sure it’s all right? I-I don’t want to burden yo-” Qu Yi is interrupted as Yan Liang sits her down on the stool in front of the mirror.

“It’s fine! What are friends for?” Her reflection in the mirror smiles to Qu Yi. “I think a curled ponytail would be something cute and casual that would fit you. What do you think?”

Qu Yi blushes, not sure what to say, “U-Uh, whatever y-you think looks best!” She smiles towards Yan Liang, “I-I trust you!”

Yan Liang sees Qu Yi’s smile and can't help but blush. “Ahh, Leave it to me Qu Yi! I won’t let you down!”

Wen Chou sighs. “Well, you two enjoy that. I’ll be getting dressed myself.” She begins to pull up her T-shirt.

Yan Liang gasps before quickly closing the door. “I swear, that girl must have been raised in a barn!”

Qu Yi watches Yan Liang getting to work, readying the hair dryer and plugging the curling iron in. “T-Thank you Yan Liang.” She averts her eyes, “Being a girl on my own is a bit hard to get used to…”

Yan Liang smiles. “Don’t worry, it was tough for most of us.” She then scratches her head a bit confused. “At least, I think it was?” She folds her arms, “Thinking back on it, it kind of feels... hard to picture…” She scrunches her eyebrows as she tries to concentrate. “If I recall, it was tough for me... I can’t remember why though…” Yan Liang’s focuses so much on her memory, it distracts her so much that she doesn’t catch Qu Yi specifically stating the “being a girl” part of her comment.

Meanwhile, in the room, Wen Chou has gotten dressed quickly. She looks in the mirror, licking her hand and patting her hair to help keep the bedhead down. “That should be fine.” She turns around in her reflection. “I look presentable, Yuan Shao shouldn’t have any issue with my uniform.” She smiles to herself, then she jumps face first into her bed. “Ahhhh, now I just wait for the girls to be done fixing their hair and whatever!” She lays her head on her pillow. “I never realized how comfy these pillows are.” She laughs; her voice muffled in the pillow. “I could lay here forever.”

Wen Chou’s mind begins to wander. “Qu Yi, I feel like I’m lucky to be her roommate. A new friend just like a little sibling. She sure is shy like one. I bet she’d love baseball if she tried it.” She lifts her head up somewhat, her nose stuck above her pillow. “She looks like she could be a great catcher. Besides, I’d love to pitch for her to catch! I know I’m only the substitute pitcher but…” She begins to daydream, imagining Qu Yi giving her signs for a pitch. Wen Chou nods in comprehension. She winds up and throws-

A sudden and very loud BANG against the wall takes her out of her imagination. Wen Chou looks at the wall confused, before turning her head towards the bathroom. She hears the hair dryer going. “Huh, did those two not hear it over their windy hair?” She looks back at the wall. “I should probably see if our neighbor is okay.”

Wen Chou exits the room and sees a few students in their uniforms in the hall, talking near their rooms, no doubt having just gotten back or on their way to breakfast. Wen Chou turns right looking at the door next to her room, 511. “Come to think of it, I don’t think I ever met our neighbors?” She scratches her head. “That’s a bit odd? I guess our schedules are just too different.” She shrugs and slowly knocks on the door before shouting, “Hey? I heard a loud bang. Are things okay?”

“Yesyesyes! Things are fine! I-I didn’t accidentally kick the wall or anything! Don’t come in! O-Oh! And don’t call for help!”

Wen Chou raises her eyebrow. “I think I’ve heard this voice before? It’s not anyone I know closely though.” She tilts her head to the side as she folds her arms, “I wonder if they left the door unlocked?” She grows a small, mischievous grin. “Well now, wouldn’t hurt to try it.” She turns the knob on the door, finding it unlocked. She takes a small peak in, seeing no one around, she opens the door wider. “Huh? Where’d she go?” She notices the bathroom on the right side of the room, just like her own room. “Oh, duh. She must have been in the bathroom when she made that noise.” She turns around to leave when she hears some faint talking from the bathroom. “Huh?” She slowly creeps closer, putting her ear near the doorway.

“Captain! The boat is sinking!” The voice changes to a deeper tone. “It’s hopeless! Abandon ship while you can!” The voice returns to its regular pitch. “Fear not!” The voice then gasps, “Is that?” Back to the deeper tone, “It is! Orange Magical Girl!” The voice shifts back to normal again. “Yes! And I am here to stop the evil Kraken!” Wen Chou tries not to snicker as a new tone of voice joins the conversation “GRAGHAGRAGHREAGO!” Wen Chou bites her tongue, trying not to give away her position. The voice returns to normal, “By the power of Orange Hue I will punish you!”

Wen Chou slowly backs away, covering her mouth as snickers sneak their way out. She slowly exits the room and closes the door very quickly and silently. She slowly enters her room, closing the door. “PFFFFFFFT! AHAHAHAHAHA!” She falls on Yan Liang’s bed, her legs kicking in the air. “W-W-Who was that?! Playing with toys in their bath?!” She wipes a tear from her face. “A-A-And the voices she did?! Pfffft, hahahahaha!!” She sits up, wiping a tear from her eye, just starting to gain control of her laughter.

The bathroom door opens, Yan Liang standing out proudly, blocking the view from Wen Chou. “Well! I think I somehow made Qu Yi an even Cuter Yi!” A terrible rimshot may have well filled the background.

Wen Chou immediately stops herself mid-laugh and looks to Yan Liang straight-faced. “What’s wrong with you?”

“Er, well, uh.” Yan Liang’s failed joke drains all confidence from her. She slouches over at Wen Chou’s comment. “Uh, anyway, here she is.”

Yan Liang moves from the doorway, revealing Qu Yi’s hair. It is expertly bundled in a ponytail that curls as it goes down. This hair, of course, is complimented by a blushing face that averts her eyes from Wen Chou. “U-Uh, d-do I look normal?” Qu Yi asks, peeking a glance at Wen Chou’s reaction.

Wen Chou falls back in surprise. “GAH! QU YI! You’re- You’re CUTER than before!”

Qu Yi blushes even brighter. “A-Ah!” She grabbed her ponytail, unsure what to say.

“It’s good, I mean!” Wen Chou instantly shoots back up. “I-I didn’t mean for it to sound bad!”

Qu Yi looks down shyly. “I-I just feel completely different with my hair like this. I’m worried people will stare at me.”

Yan Liang glares at Wen Chou, as she signals with her eyes to say something nice to Qu Yi.

Wen Chou smiles as she scratches the back of her head, “H-Hey! Don’t worry Newbie!” She gives her newer roommate a thumbs up. “I think you’ll blend in just fine! I’ll protect you anyway, all right?”

Qu Yi blushes and turns back towards Wen Chou. “O-Okay. T-Thanks!” She lets down a little bow forward. “C-Can you show me where the cafeteria is?” She holds her hands down in front of her skirt demurely.

Wen Chou and Yan Liang can’t help but blush. “Here, I’ll lead the way!” Yan Liang smiles as she opens the door to the room.

“Hey! Not so fast!” Wen Chou quickly steps in front of Yan Liang. “You helped with her hair, so I get to lead the way to the cafeteria!”

Yan Liang looks at Wen Chou’s determined face and sighs. “I don’t think it matters that much, but okay?”

Wen Chou gives Qu Yi a thumbs up. “Don’t worry, Newbie! We’ll find the cafeteria yet!”

Qu Yi smiles to Wen Chou, although, having the one leading the way say they’ll “find” it causes her to second guess the situation.
