Chapter 77 - The Fear That Breaks Her

  The nightmare-Rian stepped forward,

his body formed from twisting shadow and flickering blue light.

His eyes glowed like broken stars—

too bright, too sharp, too cold.

Alya's breath caught in her throat.

She could feel the Seal behind this illusion.

It wasn't Rian—but it was everything she feared he could be.

Ren clutched her stick like a baseball bat.

"Oh GREAT. It made a demon-version of the emotionally unstable boy. PERFECT."

  Eris narrowed her eyes.

  "That's not Rian's aura...

  It's mimicking his weakness.

  And amplifying it."

Aster stepped to the edge of the clearing, voice grim.

  "This is the Second Trial.

  The trial of Loss."

  Lami whimpered,

  "W-we don't like that trial..."

  Mila whispered,

"She has to face what she fears losing."

  Alya stepped forward instinctively—

pressing Cael back with her arm.

  "I'll handle it."

  Cael grabbed her wrist.

  "No.

  We face it together."

  She turned to him sharply.

  "Cael—NO.

  This trial is about you.

  If you get hurt—"

  "I don't care."

  Alya's voice cracked.

  "I do."

  Cael inhaled sharply—

her pain hitting him through the Heart Link.

He stepped closer, forehead almost touching hers.

"You can't protect me from everything."

  "I can try."

  Cael swallowed.

  "You shouldn't."

  Alya trembled.

  "But I will."

  Ren gagged.

"This is too much. I need a snack before I die of mutual devotion."

  The Nightmare Speaks

  The shadow-Rian smiled—

  slow, cruel, knowing.

"So this is what you chose..."

  His voice dripped with venom.

"A boy who would die for you."

  Cael tensed.

  Alya snarled,

  "Don't talk about him."

  The shadow ignored her,

  tilting his head at Cael.

"You think you can protect the Convergence?

  You?

  Weak.

  Breakable.

  Human."

Cael tightened his grip on Ayla's hand.

This tale has been pilfered from Royal Road. If found on Amazon, kindly file a report.

  "Human is enough."

  The shadow smiled wider.

  "For her?

  Never."

  And he vanished.

  Alya stiffened—

And the shadow appeared behind Cael.

Its blade-like hand aimed for his spine.

  Alya screamed:

  "NO!"

  Magic burst from her—

  but sputtered, breaking apart midair.

  The Seal pulsed.

  Testing her.

Testing whether she could protect her anchor

  without destroying herself.

  But Cael moved first.

  He stepped forward—

  pulling Ayla behind him.

  And something inside him—

  snapped awake.

  Cael's Ability Awakens

A pulse of warm, gold-white energy burst from Cael's chest—

  like a shield expanding outward.

  The shadow-Rian jerked back.

  Alya gasped.

  "Cael—what was that—?"

Cael stared at his trembling hands, stunned.

  "I—I don't know—"

  Aster's eyes widened.

  "Resonance echo."

  Ren blinked.

  "What the hell is that?!"

  Aster stepped forward, voice urgent.

"The Heart Link didn't just give Ayla an anchor.

It gave Cael... a piece of her resonance."

  Alya froze.

  "He has my magic?"

  Aster shook his head.

  "Not quite.

He has a reflection of it.

A fragment that acts on instinct—

  protecting you."

  Cael exhaled shakily.

"So... it activates when she's in danger?"

  Aster nodded.

  "Yes."

  Alya's heart pounded.

"That means if something attacks me—

  it'll hit him too."

  Aster didn't deny it.

Cael turned to her, voice soft.

  "Then we stay alive together."

  Alya's throat tightened.

  Ren whispered to Eris,

"WHY IS THIS SO ROMANTIC AND TRAUMATIC AT THE SAME TIME."

  Eris whispered back,

  "That's their whole brand."

  The Shadow Attacks Again

  The nightmare flickered—

  reappearing across the clearing.

"You can't protect each other," it hissed.

  Alya tried to summon wind—

  but it sputtered weakly.

  Her frustration burned.

  "Why won't my magic hold?!"

  Aster answered sharply.

"The Seal isn't letting you use raw power.

It wants to see your heart."

  Alya clenched her teeth.

"My HEART won't stop this thing!"

The shadow rushed at Cael again.

  This time—

  Cael didn't hesitate.

  He stepped forward—

  Alya shouted,

  "CAEL—DON'T—"

—but Cael met the attack head-on.

  The resonance echo flared again—

  BOOM—

A burst of protective force knocked the shadow back.

  Alya stared at him, breathless.

  "Cael...

  you're shielding me."

  He shook his head.

  "No...

  I'm shielding us."

  Alya's vision blurred.

  Her chest ached.

  But the shadow simply laughed.

  "You protect him.

  He protects you.

  But protection is not victory."

  It flicked its hand—

  A black spear formed

and hurled directly at Cael's heart.

  Alya screamed.

  Cael braced.

  The world slowed.

  The Heart Link pulsed—

  fast.

  hard.

  burning.

  Alya felt it.

  His fear.

  His determination.

His willingness to take the hit.

  And something inside her

  snapped.

  Not in fear.

  In love.

  Alya roared:

"YOU CAN'T TAKE HIM FROM ME!"

  Her magic flared—

  raw, wild, unstable—

but she didn't pull from herself.

  She pulled from Cael.

  The thread blazed.

  Alya's power surged—

  stabilized through him—

  shaping itself around his resonance.

  Wind twisted with fire.

  Water with light.

  Earth with warmth.

  Alya thrust her hand forward—

  The spear shattered.

  Ren screamed in joy.

  "I LOVE THIS MOVIE—"

  Eris muttered,

  "It's not a movie—"

  "IT IS NOW."

  Alya's Counterattack

  Alya's magic swelled—

  but instead of overwhelming her,

  Cael's resonance held it steady.

  Her voice shook with power.

"You don't get to touch him."

  The shadow hissed.

  "You can't win."

  Alya stepped forward.

  "I don't need to win."

  The air vibrated.

"I just need to protect him."

She pulled again through the Link—

  Cael gasped—

  but stayed strong.

  Alya's body glowed—

five colors circling her like a storm.

  The shadow lunged.

  Alya met it head-on.

  The clash was blinding—

a burst of raw resonance exploding across the clearing.

  When the light faded—

  the nightmare-Rian fractured like glass.

  Alya whispered:

  "I choose him."

  The shadow shattered.

  Silence.

Alya dropped to her knees, exhausted—

but Cael caught her instantly, pulling her into his arms.

"You did it," he whispered, voice trembling.

Alya pressed her forehead to his.

  "We did it."

And the Seal pulsed in the sky—

  APPROVED.

  HEART LINK VALID.

  TRIAL PASSED.

  Alya exhaled.

  Cael held her tighter.

  Ren wiped a tear dramatically.

  "I LOVE LOVE—"

  Eris shoved her face away.

  Lami clapped quietly through tears.

  Mila smiled weakly.

"He chose you back," she whispered.

  Alya looked at Cael.

And saw it in his eyes.

  Yes.

  He did.

  Always had.

  Always would.
