Chapter 3 - A tale from the past

?You see, this land may seem peaceful without the presence of hostile creatures, but I assure you it is absolutely not the case.?

Seven years have passed since that great nightmare, but I will never be able to forget what I saw. It was a day like any other; I was helping my father forge Ankhan without set gems when suddenly.

?Renjiro, how about you try forging an Ankhon completely on your own? I want to see how you manage.?

  ?Certainly!?

I was really happy, the very first Ankhon made by me without anyone's help. I decided to make a ring since it was the type of Ankhon I found easiest to forge. I took the gold and melted it in a very small bar-shaped mold and in the setting mold for the gems. After it had become slightly more solid, I took some pliers and began to shape it into a ring, and I put the setting on it. Finally, I put everything in the water to cool it down, and once it was cold, I began to refine it from any impurities.

My father was watching me with a very serious and proud look.

?You did a good job, congratulations! I'm proud of you, Renjiro! As a reward, you'll have the rest of the day off. Go and have fun however you see fit.?

?Certainly, thank you so much, dad!?

I hugged him and then went to mom to tell her what I had just done.

?Mommy, mommy, I made my very first Ankhon all by myself, without dad's help!?

She looked at me with a sweet smile and put a hand on my head, stroking it gently.

?You're just like your father, you know? He also made his first Ankhon alone exactly at 13. At the time, we were just friends, even though we had known each other since we were little, and for this reason, he decided to forge a ring and give it to me as a sign of friendship. I almost never wear it because I've always been a bit clumsy, and I would hate to lose or ruin it. I still remember the smile he had on his face when he gave me the gift; he was so happy, and I think it was from that exact moment that your father and I started to get closer and closer until we became a couple. Anyway, I don't want to take up any more of your time; you have the rest of the day off, right??

?Yes, thank you so much, mommy!?

I was thrilled, so I went to my sister Reiko to tell her everything too. She was also very happy about the news. Meanwhile, our parents were managing the shop as usual, while my sister and I had decided that to celebrate, we would play with everything we could find in the back room. Suddenly, well hidden by a pile of objects, a black box with a line forming an empty white rectangle with "Ouija Board" written on it immediately caught our eyes, and so we decided to take the box and bring it to our house. As soon as we arrived, we went to our room and opened the box, inside which we found a slightly dark red booklet with "Instructions" written on it in off-white. From there, we began to gather all the materials that were requested in that booklet and arranged them all in our room. And so, following the instructions, we had placed the board in the precise center of the room, surrounded it with 9 black candles connected by a circle made of salt, lit all the candles, and put our fingers on the board, and we began to ask questions.

?My name is Renjiro, and this is my twin sister Reiko. What's your name??

  We received no answer.

?Is there anyone who can hear us by any chance??

Once again, we received no answer.

?This thing is a scam, let's get out of here, Reiko.?

And so Reiko and I took our fingers off the board without saying goodbye since no spirit seemed to have answered. We blew out the black candles and put white candles in their place, lit them, and then we left, leaving everything there. I went to Tuthakhamon to get the materials that our parents had ordered, while Reiko had returned to the shop. Meanwhile, I had arrived at the market and had already gotten everything I needed, so I was returning with the load of materials we had requested from Tutankhamon. As soon as I arrived in front of the shop, I looked at the sky; the sun had become completely black with a thin yellow border. Our mother, Rimitsu Jokarin, suddenly and hurriedly opened the shop door, hugged me tightly, crying.

  ?Thank goodness you're alright.?

She took me and rushed me inside the shop, leaving the crate of materials on the ground. She closed the door very quickly and violently, gathered both Reiko and me and our father, Shunjiro Chifakuji, in the center of the room with her, and for some reason still unknown to me, she took an Ankh in her hand and began to formulate a kind of spell. I began to see that the spirit gem contained in the Ankh was changing color from gray to black, and the symbol of a white shield appeared. I noticed that a barrier was forming around us. Immediately after, our parents both went outside the barrier and told us to stay inside, but before doing so, my father gave me the ring-shaped Ankhon that I had forged that morning, but with a spirit gem set inside it. He looked at me with a smile and a burning look of trust.

?Please, whatever happens, protect Reiko. I'm counting on you!?

After saying goodbye, we saw that they both went out of the shop and closed the door, waving goodbye to us again with a smile. We heard strange noises coming from everywhere. We didn't know what to do and hoped that all this would finally end. We were terrified; we couldn't move; we stayed embraced the whole time.

A long time had passed; nothing could be heard anymore, and we tried to go out to look for our parents, but the barrier apparently prevented us from leaving for some reason. The magical lights of the shop were fading because they hadn't been recharged for a long time. Suddenly, the door opened, and we saw our mother who had opened it. We were truly happy; we shouted at the top of our lungs for our mother to come and open the barrier to greet us. She was approaching, slowly, without saying a word. As soon as she was close enough to see her clearly, I saw that she was covered in blood and wounds, and on her face was a sadistic smile, very satisfied with something she had recently accomplished. I realized that she was dragging something very large with her, and we immediately recognized that it was the corpse of our deceased father.

?Hahahahaha, it was really easy to subjugate this man. I just had to possess the body of his beloved, and he did nothing to stop me.?

Reiko and I didn't understand what was happening; we kept crying uncontrollably while our mother stood there continuing to say, continuing to shout that we would be next. The lights went out and came back on, and suddenly, for a few seconds, she stopped laughing. I saw that she was crying, and while her blood-covered face was full of anguish and while she continued to cover herself with tears, she said to me:

  ?Please, Renjiro, kill me.?

Immediately after that sentence, the lights went out and came back on again, and she began to laugh sadistically again. At that point, I understood that staying there crying was useless. I would have to kill the person who gave birth to me and my sister, the person who loved us, played with us, and cared for us myself. Suddenly, I heard a voice coming from nowhere that said to me:

?My name is Ignis Ra, I will help you defeat the being that has possessed your mother.?

At that moment, I didn't give it too much thought, so I mustered my courage and used the Ankhon that my father had entrusted to me to lower the barrier that our mother had erected so that I could go out and fight her. My stone was turning yellow, but the sun wasn't white; it was turning red, red like the anger I was feeling at that moment. I had finally removed the barrier, and a crack had appeared on the gem. I was about to attack when suddenly the door was destroyed, and an old man with a strange staff in his hand stopped me.

?Don't do it, boy, or you'll regret it for the rest of your life. I'm sorry I couldn't arrive sooner, but let an old family friend take care of this.? I immediately noticed that the determination in his eyes was the same that I had seen in my father's. I took my sister's hand and fled from the shop to go home and destroy what had caused all this commotion. While we were heading towards the exit, I noticed that the old man who was fighting our mother uttered a phrase.

?Burn everything that is impure: Ra, ancient spirit of the Sun.?

Immediately after, his staff suddenly caught fire and transformed into a magnificent katana with a white hilt and yellow triangles and a guard that was shaped like flames, but it wasn't the time to stand there and be enchanted. We hurried towards our house, while on the street there was everything: beings with human features, some more, some less, some transparent, others covered in bandages, others vivid but full of wounds and holes. It was a horrifying sight. Everyone in the city was dying. Around the street there were only those monsters, nothing else, truly gruesome. We arrived home and immediately went to our room. Using the Ankhon, I used a fire hekau so that it could destroy that cursed board forever. This time I was calm; in fact, the sun on the yellow spirit gem was white. I destroyed that cursed board once and for all, and suddenly all those annoying noises that had been heard until just now had disappeared. The gem that was set on my Ankhon had completely shattered because it wasn't destined to be mine. After destroying that board, we immediately left the house, and the first thing we noticed were the corpses of the people who had died in this disaster, but we also noticed that the sun had returned to normal. We hurried to the shop; the old man was outside with a sad look on his face, his hands resting on his staff, and it almost seemed like he was praying. We mustered our courage and entered the shop. Both our parents were there lying on the ground, hand in hand, with a happy and calm look for some reason. Meanwhile, both Reiko and I were crying uncontrollably without ever stopping. After a few hours, we had finally managed to calm down a bit, and so the old man who had come to our rescue came in to introduce himself.

?I am Yamamoto Asahi, a good friend of your parents. I'm sorry I couldn't arrive in time to save them…?

?It's not your fault, Mr. Yamamoto…?

?Don't worry, you can call me Asahi without any problems.

?Alright, Mr. Asahi. As I was saying, the fault i-i-isn't yours or my sister's… the fault is only and exclusively mine…?

I stopped abruptly without finishing the sentence because the old man Asahi put a hand on my head, bent down, and looked me in the eyes with a very gentle look.

?Every person and living being has their own destiny, only we are not given to know it and we discover it as we walk it. Their destiny wanted their life to end here, in this place and at this time, and as you can see from their faces, they are not sorry. Do you know why? Because they have no regrets. They lived their lives to the fullest, raising two strong and lively children to whom they gave all the love they could. They faced all the complexities and obstacles of life to get here with their heads held high. That's why you should be proud of your parents. Do you want to take your parents and all those who lost their lives today with me to a resting place worthy of that name??

Without thinking twice, I said yes to him.

?Good, but before we do that, I want you to know that no one except us will remember this tragedy, so don't mention it to the inhabitants of Egyxo. Also, I have a request to make of you. The day will come when a young couple will appear in your workshop, a girl with hair as red as the flames of the Ignis arbor, and a boy with hair as blue as the fronds of the Lapis lumi. It will be at that precise moment that you must tell them what happened today, explain to them how to use the Ankhan, and help them on their journey.?

At first, we didn't understand what the old man Asahi was talking about, and so without thinking twice, we agreed to the request he had made of us. So, all three of us headed towards a small temple located on a small square that I had always seen from the outside and never from the inside. So much so that when I entered, I was astonished. Inside, it was immense, gigantic, it almost seemed to have no end, and there were tombs already well arranged for everyone, including two for our parents.

?Hehehe, he certainly likes to do things on a grand scale.?

Asahi said, but I still don't know who he was referring to with those words. Not giving it too much thought, we set to work placing all those who had died that day in the various tombs. The next day, we left the house, and as Asahi said, none of the survivors remembered what had happened. They lived their lives peacefully as always. From that moment on, despite being only 13 years old, we managed our parents' workshop until today.

?Even today, I can't help but feel guilty for what happened that day. It's really true that curiosity killed the cat.?

Reiko hugged Renjiro, who was almost crying thinking about what had happened, and in the meantime, a couple of people suddenly appeared in front of Reiko and Renjiro.

?You should stop thinking about what happened in the past. What happened wasn't your fault. You should try to move on. You've made giant strides in these years, managing the workshop completely alone with your sister. Your father and I are truly proud of you, and we would also like to give you a gift to congratulate you, but unfortunately, our words will never reach your ears, so.?

?You can rest assured, your parents don't blame you at all. On the contrary, they are happy that you have managed to run the workshop completely alone until now, and they would also like you two to have a gift from them.?

?S-sexta, is it really appropriate to spout such nonsense in such a dramatic moment!??

Sextus turned to Sexta, keeping his eyes closed with his hand behind his head.

?I understand that you want to cheer him up, but this isn't the right way to…?

Sextus, before finishing the sentence, opened his eyes and stopped abruptly.

?Sexta, why has the pupil of your left eye become a white moon??

Everyone in the room, after that question, noticed that peculiar transformation and didn't know how to react. Sexta herself was completely confused and didn't know how to behave. That couple that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere a little earlier was astonished that someone could interact with them, and so they both approached Sexta. The woman took Sexta's hands and asked:

  ?So, you can see us??

?Of course I can see you, what kind of questions are those! Why shouldn't I be able to see you??

Renjiro was amazed by what was happening and, going in front of Sexta, unknowingly overlapping with the strange couple that was already in front of her, knelt down and asked:

?Please, could you describe these two figures that you see right now??

?Certainly, although I don't understand why you're asking me. One of the two is a fairly tall woman with wavy pink hair and light teal tips, she has beautiful blue eyes that resemble the sea, a very sweet smile and wears a white dress. While the man is slightly taller than you, very massive and full of muscles, he has wavy hair that is quite long, with yellow hair with red tips, a very proud look with red and yellow eyes that resemble a burning fire.?

If you find this story on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the infringement.

  ?It's them.?

After saying that, Renjiro burst into tears of joy.

  ?It's our parents, Reiko!?

The young couple of ghosts eventually turned out to be the Chikafuji twins' father and mother.

  ?W-W-WAIT A MOMENT, DID YOU SAY G-G-GHOSTS!?!?

?Yes, I thought you had figured it out by now, Sexta. You were even in their dimension. Whoops, maybe I shouldn't have said that.?

?ARE YOU TELLING ME THAT YOU, NARRATOR OF MY BOOTS, KNEW VERY WELL WHERE I WAS AT THAT MOMENT WHEN I WAS ALONE AND YOU COULD VERY WELL INTERACT WITH ME BUT YOU DIDN'T, HUH!?!?

?Well, I wouldn't put it quite like that, but yes. As someone has already mentioned to you, there are things that can only be known at the right time. Have a little patience. Can we continue this story now??

Sexta turned away, puffed out her cheeks, and replied: ?No, I don't want to. I refuse to have anything to do with ghosts.?

?Have you tried talking to them before judging them? You know, not all ghosts are as bad as the ones you see in horror movies.?

Sexta turned to me and asked with a happy look: ?Really??

?Of course, why would I lie to you??

Sexta puffed out her cheeks again before replying.

?As if you haven't already, huh!??

?Anyway, can we continue with the story??

Sexta, with an offended look and with her arms crossed, looking sideways, replied to me:

  ?Alright.?

The Chikafuji twins were overjoyed by the news, both crying tears of joy while embracing each other.

Throughout all this, Sextus had had stars in his eyes for who knows how long, he couldn't believe that ghosts really existed in this world, even though he unfortunately couldn't see them. He wanted to ask Sexta so many things, but he knew that by doing so he would surely incur her terrible wrath and so he decided to continue celebrating in silence.

He possesses a massive build that inspires protection to all those who are close to him. His eyes are like two burning flames full of determination and courage. He doesn't stop in front of anyone. He is a decidedly exceptional father figure. It must be why everyone is so close-knit in this family.

Rimitsu took young Sexta's hand again, pleading:

?Please, there are gifts that we both want to give to our children, you are the only one who can see and hear us to give them to them, would you help us??

Sexta was trying in every way to maintain control, even though it was clear from her expression that she was almost about to soil herself. But setting aside these details, she replied: ?C-certainly, I-I don't see w-where the problem is.?

?You're shaking like a leaf, I see the problem of course, Sexta.?

Hearing that sentence, she got a little upset.

?MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS, SEXTUS! NO ONE ASKED FOR YOUR OPINION AND REMEMBER, FOR YOU I'M TOKIKO AND NOT SEXTA, KEEP THAT WELL IN MIND!?

Everyone in that room said the same thing at the exact same moment to Sexta and Sextus:

  ?Those who despise, buy!?

At that moment, everyone started laughing like crazy, so much so that they even infected Sexta and Sextus. After a while, everyone stopped laughing and resumed talking. ?You see Sexta, my wife Rimitsu and I intended to have our children inherit our Ankhan, so when the old man Asahi came in to free my beloved from the possession of that evil spirit, I was dying and my wife was also covered in wounds, so with the last strength we had, we asked Asahi to hide our Ankhan, so that one day someone could help our children find them, and he agreed to our request, telling us about a red-haired girl who would help us, and immediately after, we died becoming ghosts. Since then, we have always watched over our children, trying to do everything possible to protect them.?

Rimitsu guided Sexta to a shelf that was inside that room.

?Now, all you have to do is open the hidden drawer that is at the bottom of the shelf. If you see, there's a small space to put your hand there.?

Sexta did as Rimitsu said and opened a drawer inside which there were 2 Ankhan.

?The blue gold ring you see is the one my husband Shunjiro forged for me and I would like Reiko to inherit it.?

  Shunjiro approached Sexta.

?Those gold earrings are the ones my wife Reiko forged secretly with the help of my father to give me when we got married and I would like Renjiro to inherit them.?

Renjiro, Reiko and Sextus were still incredulous that ghosts existed and that Sexta could see them, so they were watching everything that had just happened in complete silence. Sexta took the two Ankhan and handed them to Reiko and Renjiro, explaining to them their parents' wishes and the history of those Ankhan. The two burst into tears; there are no words to describe their current feelings. Their parents were happy that they had finally managed to have their Ankhan inherited by their children.

?I'd say the moment for tears can end now, don't you think Reiko??

Renjiro said with a look of immense happiness and Reiko replied by nodding. They both wiped away their tears and resumed the initial conversation.

?Let's start with the basics, do you know what the Ankhom are and what your Ankhom are??

?Yes, we already know that there are 9 in total and that mine is Maat, while Sexta's is absolutely unknown.?

?Actually, you should know that the Ankhom are divided into Ancients, Majors and Minors. Those 9 you know are the Ankhom of the Ancients, each of them has a specialty, but in general they can use almost all the Major Ankhom, also called Superior, and Minor Ankhom, also called Inferior. The most common ones you are born with are the Minor, the Majors are rarer than the Minors, but more common than the Ancients, and finally the Ancient ones are the rarest of all.?

  The Major/Superior Ankhom are:

Helios: represented by the symbol of a portal.

  Shades: Aqua, Aquamarine.

Yukise: represented by the symbol of a snowflake.

  Shades: Ice Blue, Azure.

Seth: represented by the symbol of a shooting star.

  Shades: Scarlet, Shadow Black.

Osiris: represented by the symbol of a star.

  Shades: Sky Blue, Antique White.

  While the Minor/Inferior Ankhom are:

Ifrit: represented by the symbol of a burning flame.

  Shades: Red.

Nek: represented by the symbol of a water droplet.

  Shades: Cyan.

Golem: represented by the symbol of a stone.

  Shades: Brown.

Zephyr: represented by the symbol of the wind blowing.

  Shades: Viridian Green.

?As you have surely noticed, each of the Major Ankhom has 2 shades, while the Minors, unlike the Ancients and Majors, have only 1 shade and not 3 or 2. Finally, there is the last category, that of those without Ankhom; the spirit gem turns a very dark and intense black in this case, and no symbol appears. There can be no mistake.?

Sexta had collapsed to the ground, and a strange black, gloomy, and dark aura had generated around her. From her face, it was very clear that she was demoralized by something that had happened. ?Sexta, why are you so depressed? Did something happen while I was talking? When I give rather long speeches, I lose track of space and those around me, continuing uninterrupted.?

?No Renjiro, it's not your fault, don't worry. It's just that the spirit gem, when it went into her hand, turned exactly as you said, black without any symbol appearing.?

Reiko looked at Renjiro for a few seconds as if to say "Can I ask her?" and he nodded.

?I imagine you and Sextus are already aware of the legend of the stranger with the black spirit gem, aren't you??

?Exactly, Tutankhamon told us about it after the gazes of everyone who was in that square struck us.?

Reiko approached Sexta and hugged her.

?I'm sorry you have to suffer so much for a stupid legend that is probably based on nothing.?

Sexta broke away from Reiko, got up, and closed her eyes, crossed her arms, looking sideways, and puffed out her cheeks because as usual, she has to act like an offended child.

?Huh? But look, I'm not upset about that, I'm just sorry I don't have an Ankhom, that's all.?

Everyone in the room started laughing, including her, to defuse the situation.

?Anyway, Sexta and Sextus, the old man Asahi sent you here also to learn how to use the Ankhan, right?? ?Exactly, but come to think of it, Sexta and I haven't eaten in quite a while, are there places to eat here??

?Yes, there's one nearby. Once you exit the workshop, just go straight to the right until you see a building made of lapis lumi wood. Before you ask, the color of the wood is a rather dark blue.?

Renjiro stood in front of Sextus, and they both shook hands in friendship.

?Alright, thank you very much, we'll see you later then!? ?Certainly Sextus, we'll be here waiting for you, have a good lunch!? After saying goodbye to everyone, Sextus and Sexta headed towards the inn, which was literally a stone's throw away, only once they arrived in front of it…

  ?SEXTA!?

?What is it, Sextus? Don't say my name so randomly, it's not nice.?

  Sextus was in complete panic.

?We don't have anything to pay for the food with!? Suddenly Sexta also started to panic, but then she thought.

?Now that I think about it, the old man Asahi secretly gave me a bag with something inside, maybe it's food!? Sextus was a bit skeptical about it, but decided to play along.

?Well, alright, as long as I get something to eat.?

Sexta pulled out of her pocket a small cloth bag closed by a tied cord. Opening it, they immediately noticed how much larger it was inside than outside and…

?BUT THAT'S GOLD, SEXTA, THEY'RE GOLD COINS!?

Sexta and Sextus were happy that they could finally afford to pay for the food and so, without hesitation, they entered the inn. They saw that it was full of chairs and tables made of lapis arbor wood. There was also a counter with a shelf full of glass bottles, with a door nearby that presumably led to the kitchen. Inside that room there were also stairs that led to the upper floor, who knows what was up there. The inn was completely empty at that moment and so they asked:

?Is anyone here by any chance??

A man appeared in front of them and began with the introductions.

?Hello young ones, welcome to my inn. I am Karim Aratiz and as you can see, I haven't had many visitors today hahaha.?

?Anyway, what brings you here to me today?? ?Hello, I am Sextus and this is Sexta, we are here because this inn was recommended to us by the Chikafuji twins and we came here to eat.?

?Ah, I see, do you happen to have any preferences on the dishes or not??

?You choose, I don't think we have any preferences, right Sexta??

  ?Yes!?

?Excellent, I will prepare the house specialty for you then! In the meantime, you can make yourselves comfortable at one of the tables.?

While continuing to play with the Ankh in his hand, Karim went behind the counter and entered that wooden door with a round window in the center, located quite high up, which seemed to be that of the kitchen. They made themselves comfortable at a table for two, facing each other, and both blushed.

?It looks like we're a couple.?

They both thought in unison, looking away from each other. Karim arrived with two flat plates and a satisfied smile.

  ?Please help yourselves.?

  ? Description

  ??????????????????????

He is definitely in shape, wears typical bartender clothes, his hair, beard, and mustache are black. From his gaze, he seems to be always very relaxed and has a necklace with an Ankh in his hand with which he always plays. He seems to be very attached to his religion. At first glance, he seems like a rather serious person, but who knows how to joke a lot when he wants to.

He placed the plate on the table and they saw that it was a pizza margherita and it looked really well made. It seemed perfect from every point of view: cooking, shape, crispiness of the dough, density of the sauce, they were both drooling.

  ?Enjoy your meal, Sexta!?

  ?Thank you, you too Sextus!?

They both took a piece and took a bite, their faces were terribly disgusted by the taste of that pizza, the rosemary and parsley were overflowing over all the other flavors, but they pretended nothing was wrong, resisting until the end and eating it all. Meanwhile, Karim had already returned to the kitchen and was coming back with a new dish.

?This here is the dish of the day, it's a real delicacy.?

A nice plate of chicken with oregano and peppers, Sextus and Sexta were sure that this time the dish would be perfect both in appearance and taste and that the previous one was a fluke, they both started eating the chicken with gusto and finished it quickly. It was delicious, but they soon realized that their mouths felt like they were on fire, because in addition to the peppers and oregano, there were pepper and chili peppers present, they immediately asked for milk while their mouths were on fire, Karim immediately went to get glasses, put the milk in them and they drank it all up and solved this problem. They could smell a very familiar fried scent coming from the kitchen and suddenly Karim said:

  ?Oh, they're finally ready!?

This time a nice plate of french fries for both, Sexta and Sextus were now wary of his cooking, so they tried to take a simple bite of the fries that seemed perfectly fried, nice and crispy and golden, but at the first bite they immediately realized that they were extremely salty.

?This guy has no idea how to use spices.? They both thought at the same time. After finishing eating those ultra-salty fries and drinking a ridiculous amount of water, Sextus and Sexta asked for the bill and…

?The total is one gold coin and as a gift on the house, if you want, you can go relax in the rooms that are on the upper floor, playing cards or chatting in peace.?

Sexta pulled out the gold coin, paid and they both decided to accept Karim's kind offer, they went up the stairs accompanied by him who showed them which room was free and then turned around going downstairs. The two went in front of the last door in the corridor, entered and were speechless with disappointment. There was a small table, two chairs, a light on the ceiling powered by magic, a window closed by two wooden shutters to keep out the light and two benches attached to opposite walls with old books on top.

?And we're supposed to rest on those? No way.?

Sexta had already settled down, throwing down all the books, and was already sleeping.

?Incredible how fast! She fell asleep in no time! Actually, it's been a long time since we slept, I wonder how long we've been in this world… I think I'll take a nap too.?
