The Devils Hangnail

Much to the young Captain's surprise, the prince took her to a place she had already been before.

With rows upon rows of armor suits, and powerful maces, blades and axes hanging up on the wall, she was in her favorite room in the castle.

"Why did we come here?" she asked with questions in her eyes.

Prince Alister guided her to the far corner of the war room where there was a massive black gate built into the wall. "You know," Rin said. "I was meaning to ask about that."

"It means ‘Royalty only’ my dear Captain Sabre!" Alister answered.

And much to her surprise, he pressed his hand on the center of the door.

She gasped as the entire door lit up magically, glowing bright purple and mimicking the unique print of his hand.

"This is something a famous Majester installed!" Alister said. "It is sensitive only to touch of the royal family."

Suddenly, Alister giggled. Rin didn't like the look in his eyes. It was his "I thought of a horrible pun" face.

His smile curled upwards. "Looks like you just needed a Finger Prince like me to see your magical sword!"

Immediately, Run seized her sword, causing the prince to flinch. "I oughta make it so bad puns are punishable by death!"

"Hah!" Alister laughed. "Pun-ishable. I guess we're both going to the guillotine."

Rin lowered her hands from the holster and strolled in. "Well, I can pardon you. You did allow me to see the legendary sword I wanted!"

"Just hurry it up," Alister muttered, nervously glancing at the entrance of the room. "I really hope my mother doesn't find out."

When he heard Rin giggling like a mischievous school girl, he knew that getting caught was the least of her worries.

Hanging on metal latches, the Devil's Hangnail gleamed in a redness so fiery it seemed to be crafted in hell itself. The tool was a massive angular cleaver that could slice the tough skin of a subdemon clean open.

Prince Alister was greatly surprised there wasn't a waterfall of drool at Rin's feet. "How the subdevil did your father find such a blade?"

Alister nodded. "He traveled deep into the subdemon's domain in the ground and stole it from them. It's one of their weapons. You could say he went to hell and back for it!"

"Whoa…" Rin said, reaching out to touch it. Alister stopped her.

"Word of advice from the finger prince, we don't want to get any fingerprints on it!"

Rin nodded and sighed. Alister was beginning to think the only thing this girl loved was long protruding weapons capable of great devastation.

"C'mon," he said, tugging her arm. "We need to go before…someone finds us!"

Rin sighed again. "Goodbye, my beautiful cutter. I hope to wield you one day!"

"You really need to get a room," Alister said, pulling her away. "A training room most likely."

He placed his hand on the sliding door, and with the magic technology, it closed perfectly.

Taking one last look at the blade, he shook his head. That beastly cutter was the last thing his father held before he faltered in battle. He didn't want to think of it anymore.

"So…" Alister snapped at Rin. "Are you finally gonna tell me what you burnt all my clothes?"

"You'll see," the captain said with a sly smile.

The two reached the front gates of the castle of Featherbottom where two guards stood. They widened their eyes at the sight of the captain standing with an interestly dressed prince with poofy white pants and a powder blue cap.

"Clear the ranks," Rin instructed. "The prince is coming through. He must head to town."

"Cap'n, sir…er… ma'am!" the guard said quickly catching himself before enduring the captain's wrath. "Has the queen given her approval?"

Rin proceeded to expound an absurd tale with a straight face. "Due to magical wardrobe malfunction, all of the prince's clothes have burned up in a fire. And these are the duds he was left with!"

"Egads!" the other guard answered. "Those look dire. He looks like a wannabe Wakespeare!"

The first guard called to the man standing on the drawbridge's tower. "Oy! We gotta get the prince to a tailor immediately. It's a fashion emergency!"

As the drawbridge lowered with a loud creak, Alister glared daggers at a smiling Rin.

Her plan had worked…at the expense of his dignity!
