Act Three A Chance
Chen Feng led his men away from Zhangjiacun, and Luo Jie slipped into the mountains.
He was really afraid that he would be shot and killed like those villagers for no reason, Roger's mind only thought of leaving this crazy place as soon as possible, the farther away from this place where human life is like grass, the better. He ran wildly all the way, relying on his innate excellent sense of direction and memory, and soon found the cave he had been in before.
Roger let out a long sigh as he gazed at the familiar cave entrance - he was afraid that the cave would disappear after he crossed over, and then he would be trapped here forever, unable to return.
However, the existence of the cave doesn't necessarily mean he can really return to modern times. What if... what if he walks to the end and finds there's no exit? Or what if... or when he comes out, time is still in the Republic era, what then?
After a moment of hesitation, Roger gritted his teeth and silently roared in his heart: "How can I be at peace without giving it a try!?"
Originally, Roger didn't have much hope for this action to succeed, and he was just doing it to comfort himself psychologically. But unexpectedly, he really walked out of the cave, climbed out of the wilderness, onto the highway, and back into modern times! Then he continued on his way to the three-star hotel where he had booked a room!
That cave turned out to be a two-way passage through space-time!
After Roger escaped back to the hotel at noon, he locked himself in his room and lay on the bed with his head buried, because he had been walking on mountain roads for two days, physically exhausted, and without sleep, his spirit was hit, so as soon as he touched the bed, he fell asleep.
……
"Ahhh!!!!!!"
Roger woke up with a start, sat up abruptly and frantically rolled up his sleeves to carefully examine his arms, only letting out a sigh of relief after confirming there were no marks on them, before slumping back against the headboard.
Just now, he dreamed that the five villagers who were shot and killed were haunting him, crazily biting his limbs one by one, while the village girls who were raped were holding him down, making him unable to move...
"How much more do you want to torment me..."
Although he had a nightmare, he managed to sleep for an entire afternoon and regained some of his senses. However, Roger, who had just woken up from the nightmare, only felt a splitting headache, his whole body aching, and his stomach growling loudly.
"Let's go out and get some fresh air and something to eat..." Roger rubbed his sore forehead and made up his mind.
The hotel's structure is a straight corridor, with rooms lined up on both sides, and the stairs are located at the far end. Roger's room is at the very back of the sixth floor of the hotel, so if he wants to go downstairs, he has to walk through the entire corridor to reach the stairs at the other end.
Roger walked out of the room, his head feeling heavy and dull. It was already evening, and the corridor lights were not very bright. The soft orange light enveloped the entire corridor in a hazy dimness. Roger started from his own room, walking past one room after another, heading towards the stairwell.
"Are we really tired today? How come we've been walking for so long and only reached halfway? Normally, we should have already arrived at the stairs by now." As he spoke, Roger looked up to gaze at the corridor stretching out before him, as well as the numerous rooms on both sides of the corridor. The number of them was not small, indicating that they still had a long way to go.
At that moment, Roger inadvertently glanced at the water dispenser standing next to him and suddenly had an epiphany: "Isn't the water dispenser supposed to be by the window? When did it move to the middle of the corridor? This is really spooky..."
"What the...?!"
He looked up again, and in front of him was a corridor, but it was actually a glass wall! His face was almost stuck to the glass! What he had just seen in front of him, the so-called room, the so-called corridor, was just an optical illusion reflected from the window.
"This... if I take another step, won't I crash into that floor-to-ceiling window!? There's no windowsill, and the gap between the floor and the window is so big, what if I fall down?!?" Roger thought in terror, but suddenly on the window in front of him appeared the faces of those dead villagers staring at him with anger...
"Ah!... Do you want me to go down too!?" Roger was so frightened that he took a cold breath, retreated continuously, and fell to the ground with an unstable foot.
……
Sitting in the hotel restaurant, Roger mechanically shoveled spoonful after spoonful of rice into his mouth, the events of the past two days having come too suddenly and shockingly to leave him at a loss.
"The master's phone is coming!"
The mobile phone suddenly rang, startling Roger, and when he took it out to look at it, it was a call from his boss.
"Hey, Roger! How's the thing I mentioned before going? This time it's a big deal! That Brazilian is just a sucker! He's only missing the four words 'foolish and rich' written on his face!"
"Boss... I... something's come up on my end..." Roger apologized awkwardly - the boss was busy negotiating with a Brazilian boss and hoped he could go to Brazil as soon as possible to inspect and finalize things.
"What's wrong? Are you hurt?! Are you sick?!"
"No... no..."
"What's wrong with you, you're not sick or injured? Don't waste words, hurry up and get over here ASAP! I'll give you double pay for the holiday later. This is a $10 million business deal! You should know that this is an opportunity of a lifetime! Others may not have such good fortune in their entire lives, and it's coming to us out of nowhere. If you let it slip away, wouldn't that be unforgivable?! Hey, hey, are you listening?!"
At this time, the boss said what Roger had long been unable to hear, his mind only echoing that sentence "You must know, this is a great opportunity! Others can't wait for a lifetime of good fortune to come to us, if you push it away, isn't that against heaven's will?"
Yes! I've actually stumbled upon a time-space cave, isn't this a great opportunity!? If I just let it go and ignore it, wouldn't that be unforgivable!? Who's always watching time-travel shows, who's always thinking about what they would do if they time-traveled?!
Go back to the mountain cave, go back to the Republic of China, go and do something!
Roger almost immediately made the decision to cross through the time-space cave again, not only for his own desire to change Chinese history, but also to give an account to those dead villagers and to stop his conscience from tormenting him day and night.
"Ah... boss, thank you! Your words just now have enlightened me! Now a great opportunity is right in front of me, if I don't cherish it then it would be unforgivable! ...I've made up my mind... I quit!"
